Rio Grande Games latest offering, Dominion is the perfect place to start if you want to learn more about strategy-based games.

Settlers of Catan

This game is hugely popular with both teens and adults and is a family favorite on game night. Don’t be intimidated by the four pages of illustration intensive rules, you will likely catch on in no time! The added structure actually allows for more fun rather than making the game less interesting or challenging. The extension pack is the perfect antidote when your group feels like they’ve experienced nearly every type of game, although it should take some time to reach that point! This strategy game focuses on gathering and increasing resources more quickly than your competitors and the random nature of the cards ensures that beginners will have just as much of as a shot at success than experienced pros. We love this game to play with our family and find that it is a great way to teach our kids about thoughtful decision making.

Cards Against Humanity

This game is perfect for a group of close friends that enjoy weird and at times raunchy humor. It is probably not a great option for family night, however. The gist of the game is the completion of a serious of fill-in-the-blank type questions and the answers are usually hilarious! This is not a good option for the faint of heart or for people who embrace political correctness. With the right group, CAH can ensure a side-splitting night of literal fun and games. It is one of our favorites and we love to create our own zany house rules before the start of play.

One of the best features of this game is the short gaming time of around 30-minutes. Many of the popular strategy games can take hours to complete which is often a greater time commitment than many want to give. The game does not require a huge amount of focus and is well-suited to newcomers to the genre. There is a strong random factor that works well in leveling the playing field between super aggressive players and those that are less agenda-driven. The high number of cards practically guarantees a completely unique experience with each game, a feature that we love.
